Sampling a pika's pantry: Temporal shifts in nutritional quality and winter preservation of American pika food caches

چکیده
Climate change is increasing temperature, decreasing precipitation, and atmospheric CO2 concentrations in many ecosystems. As carbon rises, plants may increase carbon-based defenses, such as phenolics, thereby potentially affecting food quality, foraging habits, habitat suitability for mammalian herbivores. In alpine habitats, the American pika (Ochotona princeps) a model species studying effects of changing plant chemistry on mammals. To survive between growing seasons, pikas cache “haypiles” rich phenolics. Although they are toxic to pikas, phenolic compounds facilitate retention biomass nutrition during storage, degrade over time. Alpine avens (Geum rossii, Rosales: Rosaceae) high-phenolic that comprises up 75% haypiles Colorado. Here, we tested hypothesis contemporary climate has affected nutritional value last 30 years. Specifically, compared activity, overwinter preservation collected at Niwot Ridge, Colorado (USA), 1992 those 2010 2018, spanning nearly three decades change. Phenolic activity increased since 1992, while fiber nitrogen content decreased. Importantly, also increased, particularly windblown slopes without long-lasting snow cover. Previous studies indicate this site still depend their winter caches. Higher could therefore enhance winter; however, if must further delay consuming these avoid toxicity or invest extra energy detoxification, then gains from enhanced not be beneficial. This study provides important insights into how climate-driven changes will affect herbivores future.

Poleward shifts in winter ranges of North American birds.
Climate change is thought to promote the poleward movement of geographic ranges; however, the spatial dynamics, mechanisms, and regional anthropogenic drivers associated with these trends have not been fully explored. We estimated changes in latitude of northern range boundaries, center of occurrence, and center of abundance for 254 species of winter avifauna in North America from 1975 to 2004....

OBJECTIVE To examine the association between level of food security and diabetes self-management among food pantry clients, which is largely not possible using clinic-based sampling methods. DESIGN Cross-sectional descriptive study. SETTING Community-based food pantries in California, Ohio and Texas, USA, from March 2012 through March 2014. SUBJECTS Convenience sample of adults with diabe...
متن کاملComparison of the correlation between sleep quality and quality of life of nurses in rotating shifts and fixed shifts
Introduction: Due to the nature of nursing practice, nurses face a variety of stressful situations in the workplace. They are at risk of insomnia since they work irregularly in the morning, evening and night shifts. The irregular sleep-wake pattern in nurses decreases their sleep quality and sleep duration, and also leads to their poor occupational performance. The present study was conducted t...
متن کاملApplications of Essential Oils in Food Preservation
Many food products are perishable by nature and require protection from spoilage during their preparation, storage and distribution to give them desired shelf-life. Because food products are now often sold in areas of the world far distant from their production sites, the need for extended safe shelf-life for these products has also expanded. Currently, there is a strong debate about the safety...
